Even when people wish to avoid general tooth extraction, there are cases when pulling teeth is quite essential. In some cases, dentist may necessarily recommend tooth extraction and this can be:

  • In case of severe decay or trauma
  • When you need to alleviate crowding
  • When you wish to remove a baby tooth so that permanent tooth can come
  • In case wisdom teeth are problematic for you and its removal is necessary
  • In case of periodontal (gum) disease
  • In case of severe damage or decay

Bacteria are commonly present in the mouth. Such bacteria may produce acids which can affect the tooth enamel. This can create a layer of plaque which can weaken the teeth to cause tooth loss.

What to Expect During Your Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is a common procedure in which dentist will analyze the need and condition of the individual patient before the extraction. After this, he will numb the area. Then the dentist will remove the tooth.

If required the dentist will close the area with self-dissolving stitches. This is done to close the area. In some cases, the dentist may also provide a bone graft to preserve the socket from further weakening.

What to do after a tooth extraction

After sudden tooth extraction, there are certain precautions that a patient must take. These instructions must be followed:

  • After the surgery, sit straight with your head elevated up to stop bleeding. To lie down, use pillows.
  • You can apply pressure to the area from where the tooth was pulled. This can help reduce the bleeding.
  • Change the gauze if it is needed.
  • The patient may use an ice pack which can help stop blood and can also reduce swelling if there exist any. You can use this ice pack over the mouth near the extraction site.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and eat softer foods.
  • If the problem persists consult a doctor for medication.
  • Keep brushing so that you can keep your mouth clean.
